mission

mission

Colony Wine Merchant is a neighborhood wine bar as well as a fine wine and craft beer retailer. We celebrate family owned vineyards, wineries, breweries and local businesses. We focus on small producers that craft and farm in a sustainable manner.

Colony Wine Merchant was created for our neighbors and Anaheim visitors with a sense of community in mind. Our goal is to have guests feel as they are being welcomed into to our home and leave as our friends.

bios

sonya villegas kelsen

Sonya grew up in the restaurant business working under her father, chef/owner of a number of restaurants in Pto. Vallarta, Mexico. She made her way to California to follow her passion for wine. In her early OC career she managed restaurants and beverage programs and became a certified sommelier. Since then Sonya has had the honor of managing distribution, sales, and marketing for a number of wineries (Turnbull Wine Cellars, Alpha Omega Winery, Quintessa, Monteverro etc.) state wide and on a national level.

Sonya is blessed enough to bring her years of experience under one roof with her husband Mike. In late 2014 they opened Colony Wine Merchant where they welcome guests as they were welcoming them into their home.

bios

mike kelsen

Mike grew up in a household of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist and mother, a talented vocalists who spent 30 years teaching music and choir in Orange County schools. Knowing that music would be his career, Mike would spend his days working in restaurants and nights playing all over Southern California. In 2003 he started his own entertainment company (Say When Entertainment) and has never looked back.

Mike, a talented guitarist and vocalist is still very busy playing and booking gigs but now his years in the restaurant business are being put to use. He and his wife Sonya own Colony Wine Merchant. Mike runs the ever growing beer program as well as performs for guests, which have effortlessly become friends.

anaheim history

anaheim history

Anaheim was founded in 1857 by German settlers who gave it the German name Annaheim (later changed to Anaheim) meaning “home by the (Santa Ana) river.” The settlers were part of a group who came to the United States during the German Revolution and settled in San Francisco. Fifty members of that German community moved to Southern California when they learned there was an abundance of cheap land that was once part of a Spanish land grant.

The German colonists purchased 1,165 for $2 an acre. Because of the moderate climate, two of the colonists decided Anaheim’s economic foundation would be wine production. They hired civil engineer George Hansen to carefully plan a community around vineyards to allow the growth of an abundant and thriving wine growing region. With future growth in mind he set aside parcels for schools and other public buildings which still stand today.

During 1860 to 1885, there were 50 wineries in Anaheim which produced more than 1.25 million gallons of wine annually. Towards the end of the 1880’s the vineyards were completely devastated by disease and there was no recovering. Citrus groves were planted were vines once thrived and Orange County was born. Imagine…we could have been called Wine County.

California Zinfandel $16

Zinfandel has long been thought of as the only native vitis vinifera (wine grape) to America (best known in California). Recently we found that it is native to Croatia. Regardless, Californians make this great grape like no other and it is considered as American as apple pie. Fun, forward, spicy, jammy, fruity and in some cases even elegant. Enjoy!

Renwood “Old Vine”, Amador County 2014

By the glass ~ $10

The Cleaver, California 2013

By the glass ~ $13

Bradford Mountain, Dry Creek Valley 2013

Crisp and Clean $14

When a winemaker chooses to make wine with little or no oak it is because he or she wants to lead with fruit and acidity. Oak influences wine on many levels but sometimes you just have to sit back and let the fruit speak for itself. These wines are crisp, clean and refreshing. Enjoy!

Skyfall Pinot Gris, Columbia Valley 2015

By the glass ~ $8

Two Angels Sauvignon Blanc, High Valley 2015

By the glass ~ $9

Mer Soliel “Silver”Chardonnay, Monterey 2014
